The “okyerema” is the master drummer in an “adowa” ensemble. Adowa is a traditional dancing, singing and drumming ensemble known among the Akan people of Ghana. The master drums in an adowa ensemble are called the “atumpan“. They are always played together as a pair and are also known as the “talking drums”. Adowa is performed at traditional ceremonies such as funerals and festivals where it serves as means of communication and entertainment.

As the master drummer, the okyerema plays the atumpan drums. He is, therefore, the main communicator of the messages transmitted to the people through the language of the atumpan drums.

We chose the name “Okyerema” for our newsletter because our main aim is to get our message across to you, our dear reader. We beckon you, and everyone else who will listen, to gather around as we bring you useful and poignant insights on both legal and non-legal matters.
